Phoenix-RTOS – the foundation for the Distributed Multi Provider Cloud-Edge-IoT Continuum
Project purpose and information about the project
The goal of the IPCEI-CIS project is to develop Phoenix-RTOS scalable, open- source, Edge-IoT operating system to simultaneously fulfill requirements of many industry sectors, which was selected as strategic for the project based on observed growing importance of edge processing for each of them. Such parallel development is necessary to minimize the risk of Phoenix-RTOS architecture incompatibility with particular industry sector requirements. Phoenix-RTOS architecture was designed to be scalable and to support the execution of multiple external applications but it should be enhanced by new mechanisms, support of new application execution environments and new software engineering and safety assurance methodologies support. Despite the mentioned extensions of architecture are specific to particular sectors, they possess features in common, so it is highly believed that single operating system can support multiple of verticals demanding far-edge processing. During the FID phase the next generation Edge-IoT devices based on Phoenix-RTOS and capable of running user Edge-IoT applications integrated with the Cloud will be built as use cases in major industrial verticals on the PoC level and validated in the form of short manufacturing series.
As part of the European 8ra (IPCEI-CIS) project, we are collaborating with major high-tech companies:
Bosch Research, in the context of real-time critical applications in the Edge Cloud Continuum (DE);
Deutsche Telekom, represented by T-Systems International, where Phoenix Systems will develop UAV technology (drone platform based on Phoenix-RTOS with Phoenix-PILOT autopilot) and integrate it with T-Systems autonomous logistics system (DE); Diehl Aviation, represented by its joint venture Diehl Aerospace, on the Flying Edge Concentrator for aerospace industry (DE);
Digitale Schiene Deutschland, where collaboration will be focused on expert exchange on development and implementation of an IT/OT secure Safe Computing Platform (SCP) for future digital and automated rail (DE);
Engineering Ingegneria Informatica (Engineering Group) with which Phoenix Systems will work on seamless integration of the the Smart Sensor Box into the Computing Continuum (IT);
Within the KicksforEdge (Siemens IPCEI-CIS project Dr. Daniel Horcher) working jointly to create a seamless integration of the Cloud-Edge systems down to constrained Edge devices (Smart Sensor Box) (DE);
Fachhochschule Dortmund, with which Phoenix Systems will cooperate on developing methods and platforms for Edge-loT devices testing and diagnostics (DE);
OpenNebula Systems, with which Phoenix System will work on orchestrating Edge- IoT deployments across the Computing Continuum (ES);
SYSGO - Embedding Innovations, where collaboration will be focused on (among others) Phoenix-RTOS operating with SYSGO's PIkeOS RTOS & hypervisor, development of orchestration components and standardization of developed technologies (DE).
